i'm going to helsinki, st petersburg, moscow, and the baltics in early march. should i wear snow boots or would just normal work boots do? how cold will it get?

For Russia, for sure you would need winter clothing. Not sure about Finland though. You can have a look on weather.com, maybe they can offer an extended forecast.

Never hesitate to take snow boots, particularly these countries. In March it can still be chilly, and quite often, very wet.

waterproof boots are a must. spb has warm and cold at any time. i walked in slush in dec '01, froze to death in feb'03! march MAY be cold, likely above freezing, though. helsinki is nearby and temps SEEM to be close. moscow usually is not the deep freeze we live in 700 miles west, but even march would have me wary. i usually leave russia in march. i often wear worn-out winter boots to discard along the way and it always is too cold for less of a shoe. if you like coffee, spb is VERY good for strong coffee. baltics, by the warm sea may not be so cold.
