Clothing for finland and russia in march?
i'm going to helsinki, st petersburg, moscow, and the baltics in early march. should i wear snow boots or would just normal work boots do? how cold will it get?

For Russia, for sure you would need winter clothing. Not sure about Finland though. You can have a look on weather.com, maybe they can offer an extended forecast.
2 :
Never hesitate to take snow boots, particularly these countries. In March it can still be chilly, and quite often, very wet.
3 :
waterproof boots are a must. spb has warm and cold at any time. i walked in slush in dec '01, froze to death in feb'03! march MAY be cold, likely above freezing, though. helsinki is nearby and temps SEEM to be close. moscow usually is not the deep freeze we live in 700 miles west, but even march would have me wary. i usually leave russia in march. i often wear worn-out winter boots to discard along the way and it always is too cold for less of a shoe. if you like coffee, spb is VERY good for strong coffee. baltics, by the warm sea may not be so cold.

Getting Finnish Citizenship.

Getting Finnish Citizenship.?
I'm currently a British citizen, and wish to move to Finland to live with my girlfriend. She is a Finnish citizen, but spends a lot of her time in England as her sister lives here. Our plan is for me to move there after my school. (This June/July) And then I would work in Finland for her to finish school (Two years) Then once she has finished high school, she would take a gap year, and we would use the money I have made to travel around the world. On our return we hope to return to Finland and go to Helsinki University together. After which we would move back to England(She wants to live here) We would love to both go to Uni here, however, the costs are too high without getting loans. Which she doesn't want, and knowing her she would insist I went, and stay at home herself =( (Don't worry, I wouldn't let her) It does sound like I'm trying to cheat the system to get free education, and I'm sure lots of people try it. However this is for genuine reasons. I assume I would need to be a Finnish citizen to qualify for entry to the Uni. And although my Finnish isn't amazing (yet) She is a very good teacher. So does anyone know the route I would have to take? Pauper Prince: I don't want to cheat the system or get paid, or get given any grant or fee. I just want to know if I'm allowed to study there without citizenship, or if I need citizenship, how long/are there permits/visas. Oh, and I don't want any study grants, living costs, loads, or travel expenses. I'm willing to pay 100% from my own pocket if need be.

You would need to be legally resident in Finland for a minimum of 6 years & have a knowledge of either Finnish, Swedish or Finnish Sign Language If you are married to a Finnish citizen or in registered partnerhip for 3 years, the residency requirement drops to 4 years http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finnish_nationality_law#Naturalisation_as_a_Finnish_citizen Have you asked your girlfriend to look into the requirements? You may not necessarily need citizenship, you might only have to be resident for a certain period to be eligible but it might still be a couple of years You do realise that in the UK there is a legal requirement that you be resident in the UK for a minimum of 3 years before the start of your University course to be eligible for home fees & for student loans - if you're out of the UK for 3 years or more you won't be eligible for student loans. Does the Finnish government not fund their students to study abroad? If one or both of you went to Universities which were part of the Erasmus programme or a similar exchange programme, one of you might be able to spend time in the other's country for a year
2 :
Bering British citizen means u can claim local student fee anywhere in EU, if u have spend last three years prior to joining Uni in EU. Nationality doesn't matter as far as its any EU nationality. No point for u to claim Finnish citizenship. Keep in mind u cannot cheat the system, once u try to commit anything against the system u feel smart, but system catches up with u & then penalty is much higher. Follow the book of rules & u will be fine. Good luck.
3 :
You don't need Finnish citizenship because Finnish universities offer free degrees from universities for students from EU countries. You just need to pay for your own living and that's about it. I don't think it's about cheating at all because many foreigners come to Finland to get a free degree and then leave because in real life it's really hard to get any kind of employment in here in their own field. I see that you'd be a good hardworking person if you see some unfairness in getting a free degree. However we Finns are so pampered in this so we take free education as granted so why not adapt to it. (heh heh) Well that's about it you have a plan!

Want to work in Finnish hospital, but don't speak Finnish?

imagine a person from poland going to america without knowing any english, expecting to find a job within the medical profession. of course you need to speak the language of the country you go to, especially as a nurse/doctor there. you need to be aböe to communicate with people there. even though most adults will know english, the kids still wont and even the adults will be resilient to be forced to speak english in their own country. what if you had to speak spanish to your doctor instead of english? i dont understand how americans think sometimes....
2 :
You think sick people suddenly magically speak a foreign language when they go to hospital? Yes, of course they speak Finnish. If you can't communicate in the language of the country, they won't consider you to be a qualified nurse, let alone employ you. If you want to work in Finland, go take language classes.

student visas usually only let you study, and you can't work on a student visa. The only exceptions that I know of is working for the university, doing research with a professor, or work that is required for a class or for your degree (internship/practicum). This is true for the US, UK and Denmark, but it's probably similar in Finland. It's the same in most countries
2 :
Being a student in Finland only affects your ability to work part-time if you're receiving student financial aid and earning more than 15200 Euros a year, in which case your financial aid will be reduced. Otherwise, just the typical rules in terms of work permits and the like. Inquire at your consulate or embassy.

get on a boat that sails northeast and get off the boat at the sign that says "Welcome to Finland"
2 :
You're going to find this very difficult to do, as transatlantic cruises are rare, very expensive and only use a few ports. Cruises like this tend to be luxury, and much more expensive than a flight. You can see journeys currently scheduled here: http://www.cruisetransatlantic.com/cruises.html The only ships listed this time of year leave from the northeastern US and go to the UK. You would need to first get to NYC from Florida. From the UK, you would have to travel by various ferries, trains and busses to get where you want to go. It would take 10-15 days (including travel within the US and Europe if you don't fly), and likely cost thousands of dollars each way.
3 :
Oh, wow! I imagine that would take weeks! And it would be expensive. I travel a lot between the U.S. and Europe and have never met anyone who has done that. Best of luck though.

Actually, it was primarily the Dutch and the African Tribal leaders who were mostly responsible for slavery. Well, the slave sales, anyway. Of course, all races are responsible for being consumers of slavery. Even now, Africans are commonly sold into slavery amongst themselves. I'm including a link from which you can get a good research jumping off point.
3 :
you've got your hackles up....now chill down
4 :
Bullshit they need to stop already. And whites were the first slaves in America it is simply not politcally correct to talk about it and they were sold to blacks on Islands. So are blacks responsblie for all slavery?? Considering to they are still selling each other in Africa.
5 :
Don't try to defend it. My family lived in Canada during that time and didn't come here until the 30's and I get the same comments. Anyone who attacks you personally on this issue is unintelligent and narrow minded. They are acting racist towards you based on your color and not on who you are as an individual.
6 :
Every race was a slave at one time, the Irish and Germans were slaves and mistreated to when they imegrated to the United States, Africans had there own people as slaves, the greeks had slaves in 800bc and guess what they weren't black, let's just move on from this topic because I never owned any slaves
7 :
People are ridiculous, brush it off and ignore them. Probably still trying for reparations too......and you weren't alive 200 years ago! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_in_the_United_States
8 :
i hate it when black people blame white people for slavery...get over yourself..it was 200+ years ago...its over. yeah i said it. so what?
9 :
Also, tell them to pick up a history book and read it once in a while. There were African tribe leaders who sold other tribes into slavery as part of war. And ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HELD SLAVES ARE ALL DEAD!
10 :
If you where not born in that time line then you couldn't do the crime , tell them get over it I have , and if they really want to point fingers there's not one race that have never part taken in the act of slavery ,blacks sold blacks , whites sold whites every nationality has turned on there own so where all to blame you don't need to apologize and anyone that shows you less respect than you give them leave them alone all together.
11 :
I don't respect you for making up fictional conversations.
12 :
I'm black myself and my one advice is to ignore them. Trust me, black people themselves can't win against these type of people. They usually don't have much education, or are really radical, no matter what you say you're doomed to being seeing as a racist, or a sale out for that matter!!! Just know that not all (the majority of) black people think or behave that way. And who cares seriously, its not like that person pay your bills or feed you, so let them talk. You know better than to talk to some crazy black guy.
13 :
A reasonable answer, assuming they actually know where Finland is.

Actually the employer is required to give paid holidays if one's employment is "permanent". Approximately it's about one month per year including weekends unless agreed otherwise. There's also general agreements on terms of work on most industries. On average we have more holidays than any other workers of the other countries. That doesn't mean that everyone has that kind of permanent agreement, most commonly shorter contracts are given with less benefits. Working life is actually changing and all those benefits could just be history after maybe about ten years.

It depends on what you are specialized in. Skillfull people are always needed. Remember you can´t go to Sweden and start to work, you need a permit to stay and a working permit. Another story is if you apply for a job in a Swedish firm, then they can help you with all the paper work. If I where you, I would contact a Swedish firm and ask them if they a person like you. I answered another of your questions and as I mentioned, it is not "easy" to get a permanent working visa (on the assumption you are a non-EU passport holder) in any of the EU countries no. For Denmark you can read all the details here http://www.nyidanmark.dk/en-us/coming_to_dk/work/work.htm For Sweden here http://www.migrationsverket.se/english.html For Finland here http://www.migri.fi/migratingtofinland/eng/index.html

depends where you are coming from
4 :
In general it depends on of which nationality you are (a citizen of a European Union member or not) and either way it´s easier for a highly educated person to get a job or a highly skilled workman/woman. Right now the possibily of getting work in Europe is almost zero, because of the regression in Europe as in other parts of the world, I´m sorry to say.

Norway-no way,Finland-too cold,Denmark-too costly,Russia-They will not allow u in.
2 :
Unless you are a highly skilled migrant in one of the areas where there is a general shortage of skills in the EU wide (not just the countries mentioned) then you will not receive an offer letter from a company, as there is simply too much money & bureaucrasy involved to get the visa for you. Sales & Marketing is a skill for which there is a mass market in the EU with many university graduates, and jobs are filled quickly e.g. here is the list of job areas which are considered "positive" Denmark http://www.nyidanmark.dk/en-us/coming_to_dk/work/job_card.htm This applies to Denmark, Finland & Norway. I am not familiar with the requirements or visa situation for Russia though.
3 :
I can't say about Norway, Finland and Russia, but to get the offer letter from a Danish employer you'll need to have skills that that employer can not get within Denmark. And even then, if your line of work is not in the positive list (see link below), then it would be difficult to get the visa (unless the job offer is for a very very high salary). As for the matter of cost, the visa issuing procedure does not cost too much, so I would assume it's not a real consideration for someone looking for employees. Last and most importantly, is the language. In sales and marketing and similar areas, where you need to communicate with people outside your company, local language fluency is very important.

3 :
It's like the other two answerers said, you need to apply for a work visa for the country you want to go to by contacting their embassy. But you will find that they all regulate this differently, and that some countries are far easier to get stuff done in than others. Also, be aware of the fact that some of the European countries are in a pact together, the EU, which means, if you get an EU-visa, you can live in all of them (that's a lot of countries, and places such as Britian, Ireland, Sweden, Germany, a.s.o. are all in it. Excluded are Switzerland and Norway - they are separate). You'll probably find it easiest in England, Ireland, and Sweden. And it's not like the US or Canada, where they basically through you out if you enter on a tourist visa, hoping to convert to a work visa while you're there, and you happen to tell them that that's your plan. In the countries listed above, you can enter as a tourist, and if you decide you want to work, go to the immigration office and apply for a work visa. Finland is also in the EU. If you get yourself an EU-visa before you go anywhere, that'll cover it. Good luck learning Finnish. If you decide you can't pull off the language, but still like Finland, try Sweden, it's very similar, and you'll get by easily with English. Plus, learning Swedish is a jiffy. It's so closely related to English you won't belive it. I was fluent in three months.

How do I text someone in Finland from America

How do I text someone in Finland from America?
I have their phone number and they said to put +358 in the front of their number when I text them. I tried that and it didn't work. I had them try to text me but that didn't work either. What do I need to do? So as an example if the number was 358 040 123 4567 it would be 011 358 040 123 4567?

The + in Europe is a 00 but from the US you have to do the following: 011 358 and the the rest of this persons number Good luck!
2 :
The answer from Robin is correct - no idea why someone gave a thumb down. To call you, they almost certainly dial 001-area code-number (ex. 001-212-123-4567). To call them you dial 011-country code-number. Note that many European phone numbers start with a zero when they dial domestically. When calling them from abroad you drop the zero, so if their phone number (without the +358) is 0123456789, you would dial 011-358-123456789 from the USA. Finally, check with your phone or cellular provider. You may need to set-up "international calling" before you can call or text to numbers abroad. Customer service for cellphones is usually 611.

How can I get assistance finding work in Europe, via agencies or otherwise

How can I get assistance finding work in Europe, via agencies or otherwise?
I am an Australian citizen who would like to move to Europe. For this I will most likely need to find employment and I'd prefer not to be simply on a working holiday Visa. If it helps, I would be mainly looking for work in the IT industry (where I have qualifications and experience) or any work where the main requirement is fluency in English, but I'm open to any kind of small, yet secure, work. What recruitment/employment agencies are there who, for a fee, will help me find work with employers who are willing to hire someone who is not a resident of their country? Ideally they would be able to provide assistance, to perhaps both myself and the employer, regarding work sponsorship Visas and other legal issues. I have been applying for jobs simply from those advertised on websites but it seems it would be far more efficient to hire an agency who have the knowledge to find positions which may be available to foreigners. That and if they are able to assist with legal issues, employers might be more willing to provide sponsorship. Any ideas on how to find work and sponsorship would be greatly appreciated. I don't mind paying for services if it means I will get results. Below are a list of countries I am most interested in. Thanks. Countries: Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK

Do guitars\ effects pedals bought in europe work in north america?
I live in Finland and I've been thinking of buying a dunlop crybaby and already have a guitar here, but i might be moving to the US in a year or so. I know that amps bought in europe won't work there, but i haven't seen anything about guitars or or pedals.

Well most guitar pedals and stomp boxes (and amplifiers) will work on a 6.3mm jack connection. Amplifiers bought in europe won't work in North America because the mains supply outlets are different, but you can fix that by buying a mains adaptor. In short, yes the guitar effects bought in Europe will work in North America because the connection styles are exactly the same internationally.

Work in canada and other european countries? Hi. 1.- I´m from mexico, 2.- I speak english, spanish and french 3.- and I 21 years old. If I enter to Canada as a tourist, can I get a work permit hiring the service of a lawyer later? Can Ido that in Finland, Iceland or Ireland?

in Canada, absolutely not. You could only do that as a refugee.

If I enter to Canada as a tourist, can I get a work permit hiring the service of a lawyer later? NO you need to find a job in Canada, from your home country. You must have skills that the company needs and that no local Canadian has. If the empoyer chooses to hire you, they must then apply to the government for permission to hire you. If and when they get permission, they can then get you a work permit. It often takes anywhere up to 1 year to get permission. And you need to stay in Mexico while you wait. So what unusual or rare skills do you have?? This is what the EMPLOYER must to do to hire you. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/resources/publications/tfw-guide.asp This is what YOU must do to get a job in Canada http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/index.asp

No 100% English speaking universities/schools, but many universities do have English-language degree programmes, though I'm not sure if there are any for your study field. The best way is to contact all the universities one by one and ask, or look from their websites.

You'll just have to brush up on your Finnish.

you need a passport and a work visa to work in a different country (i'm guessing you live elsewhere) if you get a passport and visa, be sure that you dont overstay your visa.

If you have Finish citizenship then you also have EU citizenship. As an EU citizen you can live and work in the UK legally. For the USA you have to first apply for visa work permit etc.

To move to , live and work in Finland ( the first step) you will need to apply for a work visa. See 1st site below. Then , after 6 years of continuous residence, you may apply for citizenship. Even if you meet all the requirements, this application is not always granted. See 2nd site. Learinng the language...take classes, go to language school. Of course, it would be wise to visit there first. Also, getting that work visa is far from easy.

How hard is it for an English speaking immigrant to get a job in Finland

How hard is it for an English speaking immigrant to get a job in Finland?
I live in Canada and here, even if you have a university degree from another country, it can be pretty hard for an immigrant to get a good job if they are not fluent in English. Immigrants usually work in fast food, factories, are janitors, etc. Is it the same in Finland? English is a pretty wide spread language, so would an English speaking person with limited Finnish be able to find a decent job?

Don't generalize too much. Everything in life is not written on stone in advance and it's all about what skills you posses. If you don't believe in your abilities on job hunt and in yourself then nobody else will do that for you and nobody else will have trust on you. It's simple and evil as that. Nevertheless it's very important to have faith in oneself, it's not enough if there's no jobs around or too many applicants, too much education, rising academic unemployment levels. It's all reality in Finland currently and we're going to see rising unemployment rates this year and later on. New IKEA store opened in Tampere and they currently are looking for staff. They received well over 8000 applications and they only have about 200 positions open. You could just count the probability of getting any of those jobs. Jobs that are on public sector may be more stable but they're not really that easy to get. I say you should consider any english speaking countries instead. It's really a global thing, immigrants may not become first unless they have unbeatable experience, skills. But hey even the native Finns have the same problems.

There's a lot of info here: http://www.suomi.fi/suomifi/english/subjects/teaching_and_education/education_and_educational_institutions/index.html Look for "Upper secondary schools". Some links in that section are not working yet.
2 :
Most Finns start high school at the age of 16 and spend 3 years there. Many Finnish high schools call themselves upper secondary schools (the Finnish word is lukio). One course consists of 38 lessons and you have to take at least 75 courses to graduate. This is the basic curriculum: Äidinkieli ja kirjallisuus (Mother tongue: Finnish/Swedish) 6 compulsory + 3 optional Toinen kotimainen kieli (Finnish/Swedish, both are official languages in Finland so we have to learn both) 5 + 2 Vieras A-kieli (A language, advaced foreign language. Most Finns learn English) 6 + 2 Matematiikka (Math) 10 +3 (advaced) OR 6 / 2 (ordinary) Fysiikka (Physics) 1 + 7 Kemia (Chemistry) 1 + 4 Biologia (Biology) 2 + 3 Maantiede (Geography) 2 + 2 Historia (History) 4+2 Yhteiskuntaoppi (Social science) 2 +2 Uskonto tai elämänkatsomustieto (Religion or ethics) 3 + 2 Filosofia (Philosophy) 1 + 3 Psykologia (Psychology) 1 + 4 Musiikki ja Kuvataide (Music & Arts) 3 compulsory (1 art + 2 music or vice versa) + 3 optional Liikunta (PE) 2 + 3 Terveystieto (Healt and hygiene) 1 + 2 Opinto-ohjaus (Career conselling) 1 + 1 Compulsory courses are pretty much the same but optional courses vary between schools. Big schools usually have a large number of optional courses. French, German, Italian, Spanish, Data processing, Global studies and Driving are typical examples of optional courses. As far as I know, you can only come to the UK either by yourself with a visa based on your nationality, or else to accompany your spouse when she is here working. In this case you should apply for a EEA family permit; you would be allowed to work. However, if you obtained Finnish citizenship, you could come here without any restriction.

How can I obtain a Visa from Finland.

How can I obtain a Visa from Finland.?
I'm a US citizen and I have recently moved to Finland. I've read that I'm only legally allowed to stay in Finland for up to 90 days (3 months) without a Visa. I also know that there are only three ways for me, myself, to obtain a Visa..... 1. Spouse Visa (Get married to someone in Finland.) 2. Work Visa (Find a permanent Job in Finland.) 3. Student Visa (Find a school in Finland.) I'm leaning towards the Student Visa so my question is... –What are the Requirements of a Student Visa? –What do I physically have to do to obtain a Visa at all? This is just feedback from Zafir's answer: I was totally unaware that I had to be IN my home country in order to obtain a visa. This is the first I'm hearing of this and it is pretty weird that I haven't come across this browsing the web. Can you source your facts so I may take a look myself? Although you've given me a good amount of information my questions were still unanswered. I want to know exactly how to apply for a Visa. Is it a simple, send the embassy an application and wait for it to be processed, sort of deal or is there a more complicated procedure?

Since you are in Finland you MUST contact the nearest Finnish immigration office ASAP. If you have stayed in Finland now for longer than 90 days, you are an illegal immigrant and will be fined and deported! UPDATE: Thanks! ;-) I do not understand why you are still asking on what to do? Just contact the nearest immigration office in Finland (I assume you are still in Finland) 071 873 3400 they will tell you EXACTLY what to do. And by the way, when you travelled to Finland I am sure you got a visa (stamp) in your passport when you were at the airport. The stamp should say how long you are allowed to stay, e.g. 90 days from date of entry. JUST CALL THEM!
2 :
M's answer is correct. And you cannot get either a work or study visa while you're in Finland as you entered the country under false pretences. To get a study visa you need to be accepted by a university or accredited educational institution while you are still in the US. You cannot travel to Finland to study until you have this visa. To get a job you must apply from the US and the employer must prove that there are no Finnish or EU citizens available to do the job. The employer will then help you apply for the work visa. If your 90 days is not yet up you have the option of leaving Finland for 90 days, go to the UK or other non-Schengen country for this time, then you can return to Finland for a further 90 days. So it's 90 days in Finland and 90 days out. But this is only for tourists and you are not allowed to work. However, if your 90 days are up you need to leave the country immediately as you're an illegal alien. If you've only overstayed by a few days you might be OK going through Finnish Immigration. But is you've overstayed by weeks or months you could get a stamp in your passport which prevents you from re-entering the Schengen Zone for several years. BTW it's the traveller's responsibility to find out about visas before booking any travel. EDIT: Here's a link to the Finnish Immigration website where it clearly states that visas must be obtained before travelling. In fact, unless you're visiting a country which requires no visa or issues visas at it's borders, it's always the case that you need to apply, be approved, and receive the visa before travelling. Black People in Finland

Black People in Finland?
Hello All, I was thinking about attempting to move to Finland to work for a few years. I have a friend here stateside who is from Finland and he had some very nice things to say. One thing that bothered me was that he said he had only seen 4 black people in his entire life. This revelation has prompted my question. How many black people are there in Finland? I know its a lot less than other European countries, but is the amount really THAT small? I'm primarily looking for firsthand responses. For example, how many black people do you see in a week? When you go out to bars and clubs, do you see black people there? How about restaurants? Thanks

There are certainly more of them here in Finland than those four! At least I see black people every week in my home city, but it is much more rare to see them in the countryside and in smaller towns. As for bars, clubs and things, I cannot tell because I'm not a party person/nightfly at all!!!
2 :
Hello, Let me start by saying Finland is such a beautiful, safe, and relaxing place. It is like no other place in the world! I am from San Francisco, C.A and traveled to Finland last summer with 5 other friends. We were there for almost 6 weeks and really got a feel of the place. Now as I mentioned we are all from San Francisco and very use to living in a very diverse place. I was pretty shocked to see so many blue eye, blonde hair people! I am white, but boy let me tell you they knew I was not from Finland! Ok, so to answer your question, I would run into black people from time to time. Nothing like at home, but I would say on average about 4 a night at clubs, bars ect... Not too many, but keep in mind there was not too many of anything but fin's. Its hard for me to believe that your friend has only seen 4 black people in his entrire life. He must not go out much... So I hope this helps you. Just one more thing is that I have never felt so welcome as an outsider in my life. The people were so kind and carring, even on my drunk nights:) I plan on going back next summer.
3 :
Black people are a small minority in Finland and it depends on the area really. In the capital area there may be more diverse groups of people living in there. If you go to some smaller towns you don't usually see many black people in there. But just recently I've noticed some increase because Finland has taken more refugees and immigrants. There's also many students who come here to get some degree and aren't probably staying here permanently. Getting a job in here is pretty hard and that's a fact even for the natives. I'll make it short: Coming to Finland for a job just isn't that good idea. Summer holiday in Finland may be better idea.

Not to sound pessimistic, but the job situation is not very good for foreigners here in Finland, even the mainstream Finns do have lots of unemployment at the moment because of the current economical crisis in Europe. The wages can be higher (not good salary for cleaners though!), but then again, the taxation is very high.
2 :
Wage in Finland is very high. When cleaner here, in Estonia, is getting ~300 eur per month, then Finn will get ~1800 eur/month, if not more (mom's friend working there). But yeh, that's true, that it's hard to get work there atm. and even harder, when you're from so far. My dad and most of my siblings are working there and they had no problem finding job there. I'm just worried about that how long they'll stay there, because moron russians from here are going there as criminals, so most of 'em think of us as crime country and doesn't want work force from Estonia anymore..
